Valerian During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

by on May 5, 2012

Because valerian supplements have not been evaluated or approved by the Food and Drug Administration, there is not enough information available to determine the precise effects that valerian use may have on a developing fetus.

There is also insufficient information to determine if valerian can be passed to an infant via breast milk. For these reasons, many medical professionals advise expectant and nursing mothers to err on the side of caution and avoid valerian supplements or products during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Consult your doctor if you are taking valerian supplements and are pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant while using valerian.
