What are Protein Shakes?

Protein shakes, as the name suggests, are beverages with high protein contents. These drinks are often consumed by athletes and body builders before or after a workout. Protein itself is an essential nutrient for the body and can help build muscle, skin and bones. However, it can be dangerous to consume protein in large amounts without adequate carbohydrates to balance them out.

The contents of protein shakes vary wildly from one product to another. Some protein shakes are nearly all protein while others are well balanced with carbs, or even consist mainly of carbs. You can purchase protein shakes pre-made in cans or bottles, or in the form of a powder that is mixed with milk or water, ice cubes and optional fruit in a blender.

Protein Shake Uses

protein shakesProtein shakes are used for a variety of purposes. Some dieters will incorporate protein shakes into their weight loss plan as part of a high protein diet. Though these shakes do not themselves cause weight loss, they can be an effective way to consume calories without consuming carbs. Protein shakes are also used by athletes to help muscles recover after an intense workout and for the muscles to grow. Including a moderate amount of protein shakes in your diet may help you sustain a workout regimen with less muscle soreness and more energy.
