What is Ramipril?

Ramipril, also known by the brand name Altace, is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. This medication is available by prescription only. It effectively relaxes the blood vessels in the body by blocking the enzyme which causes them to restrict. This allows for easier blood flow and in turn lowers blood pressure.

Ramipril (Altace) may be is supplied in tablet form and is available in doses of 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg and 10 mg of ramipril. Altace (Ramipril) is usually started at the lower dose of 2.5 mg and increased gradually as needed. Preventative Ramipril treatments are taken daily.

Ramipril Uses

ramiprilRamipril (Altace) is approved for the regular treatment of high blood pressure. This medication may be used following a heart attack as a treatment for congestive heart failure. In patients over the age of 55 with a history of heart disease, Ramipril can be used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack and related complications. Patients diagnosed with scleroderma may be prescribed Ramipril (Altace) for off-label treatment of kidney problems.
